MY DREAM OF FATHERHOOD, A Memoir by Rami Aizic

In His Courageous Memoir My Dream of Fatherhood: An Unconventional Journey, Rami Aizic Opens Up About the Challenges as a Gay Man Becoming a Father, Inspiring Readers to Chase their Dreams, No Matter What the Odds

Rami Aizic always wanted to be a dad ever since he was a little boy in Israel. He continued his dream when his family immigrated to Toronto, Canada, then in England where he attended university, and also when he eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he pursued a career in law, which he left and switched to psychology. In Aizic’s deeply personal and heartfelt memoir My Dream of Fatherhood: An Unconventional Journey (published by Franklin Publishers), he opens up about the challenges he faced as a gay, Jewish man in the 1980s and 1990s, when the idea of men like him pursuing parenthood—let alone biological fatherhood was unheard of.

Despite the societal barriers and stigmas of the time, Aizic’s story is one of unwavering determination, grit and ultimately, success in achieving his dream of becoming a father. His experiences speak directly to the struggles of marginalized communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community, but also to anyone who has been told their dreams are impossible. By sharing his story, Aizic hopes to not only inspire others but to open a larger conversation about the broader issues of equality, identity and what it means to be a family, and the universal themes of perseverance and breaking through barriers.

Aizic openly discusses the difficulties of seeking out women who would be willing to have a child with him, revealing the emotional toll but also the deep rewards that come with not giving up on one’s dreams. With a keen understanding of child development, Aizic integrates his professional experience as a psychotherapist with his personal story, offering readers insights into how to navigate life’s most challenging and rewarding goals. When he decided to go back to school for his Master’s in Psychology, then, too, he was drawn to the study of Child Development as part of Human Development. Knowing and understanding how the child’s mind works has always fascinated Aizic, and continues to do so.

With humor, vulnerability and profound insight, Aizic shares the joys, sorrows and triumphs of building a family his way, showing that fatherhood is not just a title—it's a dream worth fighting for. And while Aizic’s story is unique, his memoir speaks to the universal desire for family, love and acceptance, and inspires readers to chase their dreams, no matter what the odds, and to never give up in the face of adversity.

“When I was growing up, society shunned gay men for wanting to have children, especially those considering having their own biological child they would raise themselves. Despite that, I set myself a goal of having a child,” said Aizic. “Pursuing my dream meant that I would have to disclose that I was gay, which did, in some cases, lead to disappointing outcomes. Chasing down women who were identified in some way as possibly willing to have a child with me was, at times, embarrassing, while other times downright deflating. Still, I had to carry on. We can all find ways to do this. Sometimes alone, sometimes with others. What is most important, in my opinion, is not to give up. I ventured out of my comfort zone to share my personal story so that others might find some solace and support in their own struggles, regardless of what they might be.”

About the Author:

After graduating from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor's in English Literature and Criminology, Rami Aizic went on to Leeds University Law School. After years of practicing law, he became aware of the lack of professional satisfaction he was experiencing, and returned to graduate school to obtain his Master's in Psychology, as well as his Marriage and Family Therapy credential. He has lived in Israel, Toronto, England and Los Angeles, which he believes has offered him the opportunity to experience, first-hand, diverse cultures and differing attitudes to a myriad of life's issues. He brings all of this with him to the therapy room. He has spent many years working with children and adolescents, ranging from Special Education needs to Gifted, in various school programs which he developed, as well as in private practice. He has found a way to bond with them, leading to a rewarding outcome in their work together. He enjoys working with families in need of assistance in the dissolution of the original family structure and creating a new one. He volunteers his time now in giving back to the therapeutic community by offering lectures and continuing education workshops at a variety of non-profit agencies, assisting psychotherapy interns with the facets of the "business" they are pursuing. And, he enjoys time with his family.
